Samsung is Developing High-Definition TFT-LCD for Notebook PCs

The thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) is bringing moving images to life on portable PCs. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has developed a 15.4` TFT-LCD for high-end notebook PCs that features Super eXtended Graphics Array (SXGA) resolution, the highest available for notebook PCs. Mass production is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of this year. TFT-LCD resolution is classified as VGA, SVGA, XGA and SXGA in ascending order. The new Samsung product has 1,280 (horizontal) by 1,024 (vertical) pixels. This is 1.7 times more than the XGA (1,024 by 768 pixels) TFT-LCDs used on notebook PCs. To date, SXGA TFT-LCDs have been used on some 17` and 18` desktop monitors. Use on notebook PCs is expected to increase as DVD-ROM drives are installed and as more notebook users connect with the Internet to transmit and receive moving picture data.

Samsung Electronics will begin to mass-produce its new high resolution TFT-LCD in the second quarter of this year. Monthly production this year will be set at 5,000 units, which will be expanded to 50,000 units per month next year. And the company expects to take an early lead in this market. Importantly, the SXGA TFT-LCD will sell for 20-30% more than XGA models. Coupled with the fact that world TFT-LCD prices are rising, Samsung Electronics officials expect profitability to be very high. Samsung Electronics plans to add a 14.1` model to its high-resolution TFT-LCD product line.

The company is using existing production lines that yield four 15.4` high-resolution TFT-LCDs from a single substrate. With the top share of the world market, Samsung Electronics will be in a position to make the SXGA TFT-LCD the world standard for notebook PCs.
